e with a Hint of Pi

JEONGMIN LEE

About the piece:

While trying to look for ideas for a song, I found that the submission date was near March 14th , which some people celebrate as pi day. I have heard and seen many videos that transcribe the digits of pi onto a piano. The result is not too surprising as the notes tend to be in a random stream. Instead of having the digits correspond to a major scale, which has seven distinct notes compared to ten digits, I used two octaves of pentatonic scales which can create more consonances, even if the notes are random. I used Euler’s constant, e, to be the main notes in the piece. The high pitched bells play the digits of e while I slipped in some digits of pi, which is played by a more electronic voice 12 seconds in.
